Burnaby, BC – Down Syndrome Research Foundation board member Barbara Laird and senior staff Joy Hayden are being individually recognized for their contribution to making a difference to the lives of people with disabilities.

Barbara Laird, board member since 2004 (and a founding member as well), retired teacher and parent of a young woman with Down syndrome has received a Champion of Inclusive Education Award from the Canadian Association for Community Living and BC Association for Community Living in recognition of her outstanding commitment to an inclusive educational system for students with special needs.

Barb has advocated at local, provincial and national levels for over 25 years promoting inclusive education. Her combination of personal and professional experiences has compelled her to tirelessly support families, train educators and professionals and to continuously search for best practices that support all students.

DSRF Director of Resource and Program Development Joy Hayden has been successfully nominated for the YWCA Woman of Distinction Award in the non-profit sector.

For over 20 years Joy has modeled a tremendous passion for the issues of inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities into our community in a healthy, respectful and celebrated way.  Joy’s approach has always demonstrated the value of a positive perspective; honouring everyone in any given situation and engaging people with insight, empathy and encouragement.

“Since our inception we have been fortunate to have the support of passionate and dedicated volunteers and staff. To have two of these individuals recognized for their outstanding contributions is very exciting. We congratulate Barbara and Joy for their accomplishments” says Dawn McKenna, Executive Director.

About the Down Syndrome Research Foundation
The non-profit Down Syndrome Research Foundation was established in 1995 with a mission to ensure a brighter future for individuals with Down syndrome and other intellectual disabilities.

At the DSRF we initiate and participate in research that provides insight into the unique learning style of these individuals. The data collected is analyzed and pilot interventions and educational programs are developed and offered. These programs test our understanding of the brain and are evaluated to see the impact on our students.
