Navigating the World of Romance
By Grant Granger - Burnaby NewsLeader Published: February 11, 2009 3:00 PM Carson and Deborah hold hands and playfully joust with each other because just like any young couple they can’t keep their hands off of each other. Unlike most other young couples, however, Carson, 20, has Down syndrome and Deborah, 21, is developmentally disabled. They met in September when Deborah joined an adult academic class at the Down Syndrome Research Foundation (DSRF) in North Burnaby. She spotted Carson wearing a Vancouver Canucks shirt and she loved the Canucks. Both also like the Backstreet Boys and the B.C. Lions. “She saw me first because I was into the Canucks all the time,” said Carson proudly while sporting a Canucks T-shirt. “He’s awesome,” said Deborah with a big smile and wearing a Canucks jersey and scarf. They liked each other so much, Carson had to get a new phone plan that included unlimited texting because they were sending so many messages back and forth.
