| Down Syndrome Research Foundation Named Partnership Award Winner
OTTAWA (November 19, 2008) – Dawn McKenna (Executive Director, Down Syndrome Research Foundation) will be awarded the 2008 CIHR Partnership Award tonight in Ottawa during the Canadian Health Research Awards ceremony. This award recognizes partnerships which exemplify excellence by bringing health research communities together to create innovative approaches to research questions; to develop research agendas that are responsive to the health needs, concerns and priorities of Canadians; and to accelerate the translation of knowledge for the benefit of Canadians. The Down Syndrome Research Foundation (DSRF), founded in 1995, began with the goal of funding research and creating resources that would help people with Down syndrome lead independent, full lives, and has grown to be a leading non-profit charity for the advancement of Down syndrome research. The organization has created a variety of resources, including a reference library, a website and a quarterly newsletter and journal to disseminate research results. The DSRF centre in Burnaby, BC, is home to the only magnetoencephalography (MEG) facility in Western Canada, where researchers can study the magnetic fields generated by the developing human brain in real time, in order to learn more about cognitive development and brain function. Partnering with researchers and experts from leading universities and medical institutions, chief among them Simon Fraser University, has helped to promote research and education in the area of Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities. The research that DSRF has made possible, and the organization’s commitment to translating the research results into improved quality of life, makes it an outstanding model of research partnership and collaboration. The 7th annual Canadian Health Research Awards, which recognize Canada’s top health researchers, is hosted by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), in collaboration with the Health Charities Coalition of Canada, Research Canada - An Alliance for Health Discovery and other health research organizations.
