About the Program
Articulating thoughts into words is a difficult task to master. The complexity of language is a key reason that speech generation is challenging for very young children with and without Down syndrome, yet communication skills are vital for personal safety, community inclusion and making friends.

As a child begins to develop language it is important to further recognize that a child’s job is play and one of the most important tasks of childhood is to make friends. Often, the first experience of learning to make friends occurs in the preschool environment. It is in this setting that preschoolers learn to initiate playful interaction with their peers, play in groups, engage in imaginative play with a peer, fit into existing social groups and begin to form friendships.

There is now increasing evidence that some of the factors that contribute to difficulties in social interactions may stem from differences in joint attention and perception of emotional cues. This reduced ability has a significant impact on the development of language acquisition and higher level social and cognitive skills.

The Down Syndrome Research Foundation is offering a unique social and language development program for preschool children. Our certified speech and language pathologist will work with the children twice a week, using group dynamics and peer interactions. Within this structure, the emphasis is to foster, facilitate and optimize interactions between the children within a play context.

The long term goals are to improve the child’s social competence, language acquisition and emotional well-being through:

  • Listening
  • Conversational speaking
  • Reading emotions in self and others
  • Self esteem
  • Self control
  • How to make friends and get along
  • How to engage in interactive play

Fee: $200 per month ($160 per month for our Early Foundations Preschool students)
